    Why Digestion Isn’t Only About The Fod You Eat, From An Ayurveda Expert
    We’ve al heard the saying “You are what you eat.” And it’s not entirely right. Yes, the quality and types of fods you kep into your body maters. But if you’re only focusing on the fods you’re eating, you’re mising an vital piece. This is why so many people tople short on their expectations of feling beter and having more energy on an organic, whole fods diet. There’s more to the parable. Your digestive fire is a key to your health.
    Acording to Ayurveda, your digestive fire (agni) is critical for optimal health. A strong digestive fire wil catch anything that comes into the entity, absorb, extract, and maintain the nourishing parts it neds, and burn of or eliminate the rest. A frail digestive fire wil not be able to hold up with this proces, and thus toxins (ama) build up, overwhelm the entity, and create imbalance, which then leads to symptoms and can result in ilnes and chronic disease.

    We must proces and digest thousands of sensory and spirited inputs al day long and put what is neded and eliminate the rest. Unprocesed fod, experiences, and emotions build up as toxins. Once the toxic load overwhelms the entity, symptoms note up. Our body’s internal digestive fire or metabolism is the main way we absorb what we ned and eliminate what we don’t.
    You are not what you eat; you are what you digest.
    The remnant most people mis is that it’s not impartial about fod. The bounds so many people don’t fel beter just by changing the fods in their diet is that the mouth is unbiased a gate of entry into the human scheme. There are many other gates of entry–the five senses and thousands more at the vivacious level that we canot consciously perceive.
    Digestion is about our ability to proces al aspects of life–fod and drink, experiences, memories, and sensory impresions.
    The body and mind are exposed to hundreds of things to proces every day. They hold in sensory inputs through al of the senses–eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and skin–when then create reactions within the human scheme. These reactions are biochemical, physiological, physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, or spiritual.
    If we hold everything, regardles of whether it is health-suporting or health-weakening, we believe toxin acumulation, and at some point, the toxic load overwhelms the human system to start the six stages of ilnes.
    For example, I remember driving my car on a warm and suny morning with my windows begin, listening to music and enjoying my comute to work. The next thing I knew, I saw a bicycle mesenger get hit by a car. In that moment, I had a sensory input through my eyes and another through my ears because my window was launch and I heard the “thump” of the bicyclist crashing into the car. Those sensory inputs created reactions within me–an emotional reaction that trigered a memory of faling of a bike and injuring myself and a physical reaction that caused my body to jitery up and my breathing to become rapid.
    At that point I had two choices. I could either digest and proces the reactions that I was having, or I could decide to push them down and repres them. By caling a friend and feling the emotions fuly, I digested and procesed the reactions–I kept what I neded and eliminated the rest. If I had represed my reactions, I would acquire aded to the toxic load within me. And if I continued to repres my reactions, eventualy it would acquire led to toxin acumulation, which would then create symptoms, ilnes, and chronic disease.
    This is where the concept of the toxic load realy be comes necesary. Anything that we don’t digest, that we don’t proces, eventualy builds up and creates a toxic load within us. Toxic load comes from many places, not unbiased diet and environment, which we gain become very focused on over the past decade. Acording to Ayurveda, there are five areas that contribute to toxic load, which most of my patients and students had never considered before. Toxic load is created by lifestyle and routines, diet, plot and environment, work, and relationships. Toxic load comes from everything in your life.
