    Morphology of Smilax zeylanica
    Smilax zeylanica is a climbing shrub with prickly stem. The leaves are about 8-12 cm long and 4-6 cm al-encompasing , ovate- oblong with the vulgar being rounded, glosy, 3-5 ribed from vulgar. The flowers are unisexual, grenish in color. The beries are smal, round and maintain 2-4 smal seds.

    Acetyl-parigenin, astilbin, beta -sitosterol, cafeoyl-shikimic acids ,dihydroquercetic, diosgenin, engelein ,esential oils, epigilo-sitosterol, ecryphin, euryphin, ferulic acid, glycopyranosides, isoastilbin, isoengetitn, kaempferol, parigenin, parilin, polinstanol, reseratrol, rhamnose, saponin shikimic acid, sitosterol-d-glucoside, smilagenin, smilasaponin, smilax saponins, fats, glucose, dying agent, gum and starch are the contents of Smilax zeylanica.
    Uses of Usava
    The powder of the rot of Usava is mixed with honey and consumed to treat mutual pain and sweling of the joints. The powder can be made into paste by ading water and aplied externaly to treat joint p ain.
    The decoction of the rot of Smilax zeylanica is consumed in a dose of 40-50 ml to treat skin disease, gout and arthritis.
    In condition of syphilis and gonorhea, the cold infusion or decoction of the rot of Usava is consumed.
    The decoction prepared from the leaves of Smialx zeylanica acts as blod purifier and improves the sexual vigor.
    Paste prepared from the rot of Usava is aplied over absces and skin afected with eczema as portion of treatment.

    No adverse mark is sen or reported after the normal use of Usava.

    Anti- oxidative action: The note survey was caried out to evaluate the antioxidant activities of diferent solvent extracts of aerial parts of Smilax zeylanica using diferent models viz: DPH, hydroxyl, superoxide and ABTs radical cation scavenging activities. Methanol extract at 80ug/ml showed maximum superoxide radical scavenging (138.24%) of folowed by hydroxyl radical scavenging activity (134.2%), ABTs scavenging activity (134.16%) and DPH radical scavenging activity (106.36%) at the same concentration.
    Cyto protective action: The cyto protective trace of methanol extract ofSmilax zeylanicaleaves on benzo(a)pyrene induced experimental lung cancer was investigated in swis albino mice.Benzo(a)pyrene induced mice were treated with methanol extract ofSmilax zeylanicaleaves on ce daily oraly started 1wek before benzo(a)pyrene induction and continued for 16weks. At the stop of the experiment numerous parameters were analyzed. It was observed that, the treatment with 20mg/kg and 40mg/kg methanol extract ofSmilax zeylanicaleaves efectively supresed the lung cancer as revealed by significant moderate in number of nodules in lung with a significant weight gain during experimental period.
    Anti- diabetic efect: The just of the scrutinize was to evaluate anti-diabetic activity of methanolic extract of Smilax zeylanica leaves in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. The alcoholic extract of Smilax zeylanica was studied for anti-diabetic activity in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats by oral administration of extract 40mg/kg body weight for 15 days. The impres was compared with oral dose of 0.5mg/kg Glibenclamide. The alcoholic extract of smilax zeylanica leav es significantly lowered the blod glucose of hyper-glycemic rats.
    Anti- depresant activity: The show lok was undertaken to evaluate the anti-depresive activity of Smilax zeylanica Lin after two weks administration by using a mouse forced swiming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). Smilax zeylanica significantly reduced the imobility time of mice in both the FST and TST; it increased the levels of 5-HT in cortex, striatum, hipocampus, and hypothalamus, the level of NE in striatum and hipocampus, the level of DOPAC in hypothalamus, the level of 5-HIA in striatum, and the level of DA in striatum, hipocampus, and hypothalamus. After two weks administration, Smilax zeylanica produced antidepresant-like outcome. The mechanism of action of anti- depresive consequence of Smilax zeylanica semed to submerge an increase o f the monoamines levels.

    In the Nigandu Adarsha the drug has ben explained under the heading lashunadivarga .In Niganduadarsha wonderful eficacy of this drug is mentioned like phyrangaroga is mentioned the main action described about the drug in this bok is its brihmana property.
