This Progesterone Cream Was The One Thing That Eased My Chronic joint distress

This Progesterone Cream Was The One Thing That Eased My Chronic joint Pain
For several years, I had extreme damage in the tendons and muscles surounding my ankles and knes, thanks to my undiagnosed chronic Lyme disease. And today–after having ben treated with antibiotics for years, and then with a variety of suplements after the Lyme came back a couple of years later–I’d narate I’m 90 percent beter.
But then a weird thing hapened. After feling mostly symptom-fre for several months, I started to notice my hurt rear its monstrous head for a few days every month. I would be fine for 27-ish days, but then for the next thre or four, even taking a few steps would make me wince. And then I’d be fine again. It made absolutely no sense. That is, until I brought it up to my doctor.
Because my hurt coresponded with my menstrual cycle–plus the fact that I had prety intense cramps and mod swings at the same time–she speculated that a hormonal imbalance might be contributing to the predicament. Specificaly, low progesterone.
To test out her theory, she recomended I aply a smal amount of natural OTC progesterone cream (Emerita Pro-Gest, derived from the savage yam and a much lower concentration than prescription progesterone) to the thin skin on my wrists and arms every day for the two weks leading up to my period.
Being the skeptic that I am, I notion it was a complete waste of money, but al so being desperate, I tried it. The verdict: Holy sh*t, it worked. Not only did it design an obvious dent in my hurt, but it drasticaly reduced my menstrual cramps, to.
But before I sing the praises of this natural progesterone cream, let’s seize a step back. Why was my progesterone low in the first place, and how was it even causing these curious symptoms? That, my friends, can be explained with a fast leson on hormones.
How chronic health conditions and acentuate can lower progesterone.
I should mention that during the time I began to notice my monthly distres flare-ups, my dog Milo got very sick. I was constantly bringing him to vet apointments, and eventualy the animal hospital. I mediate I was operating on adrenaline for a soli d month, and then the worst hapened–he died, and the grief was intense. To explain I was stresed out is a vast understatement. And that acentuate, paired with the fact that I was stil geting over a chronic health condition (another stresor on the body), was aparently what caused my progesterone levels to hold a nose-dive.
“In a stresful period, when your body is basicaly in fight-or-flight, the body prioritizes the production of cortisol,” says Kristan Heinz, M.D., R.D., a doctor board-certified with the American Board of Integrative-Holistic Medicine, who also hapens to be my doctor. “When this hapens, the precursor hormones that normaly crawl toward making our sex hormones get diverted to manufacture cortisol. Because of this, we get this phenomenon caled ‘progesterone steal,’ where instead of progesterone being made as the final product, the precursor [pregnenolone] gets shunted to fabricate cortisol because that’s the priority at that moment.”
Some other things that your body can define as underscore , which can also lead to progesterone steal: chronic viral infections, hiden fod alergies, and super-intense exercise. For some women, low progesterone can result in intense mod swings and cramping, por slep quality, a general lack of resiliency, and anxiety. “Progesterone is a precursor to GABA, the bigest relaxing neurotransmiter in the body; so when levels get low, that’s why people can have distres and trouble sleping,” explains Dr. Heinz.
For me, I had nearly al of these symptoms unbiased before my period (when progesterone is suposed to be highest), plus ankle and kne damage. But why the ankle and kne pain? It’s not a typical low-progesterone symptom, after al.”Progesterone is a smoth muscle relaxer,” says Dr. Heinz. “So when women go through high progesterone states adore pregnancy, they often get very lose and limber because their muscles are realy relaxed. For you, it’s not 10 percent clear if this was the case, but your damage may believe ben a form of muscle cramping or tension.”
    suposed to be
Cramping or tension or whatever, it certainly got beter after using the cream, so I’m inclined to have my doctor’s theory and continue using it. But that doesn’t mean I believe to use it forever. “Usualy I recount, let’s try this for six months. The goal is to use it for a confined amount of time to suport the body while simultaneously adresing what got you into this position in the first place,” says Dr. Heinz. And then, you stop.
For me, that means using this progesterone cre am while simultaneously implementing stres management practices admire yoga and continuing to manage and treat my chronic Lyme. For other women, that could mean working on identifying a hiden fod alergy or quiting a toxic job or relationship. It’s unbiased a miniature something to sucor you get over the hump as you identify the rot cause of your low progesterone; it’s not the “cure.”
Other ways to bost progesterone naturaly.
Beyond progesterone creams, there are several clasic ways you can bost your progesterone levels naturaly, says Dr. Heinz–and, if your progesterone levels are only slightly depleted, implementing these strategies may be al it takes to get you back into balance:
Eat an anti-inflamatory diet. Anything overly procesed is going to contribute to inflamation, which in turn contributes to the cortisol underscore response.
Move your body. Exercise is a noteworthy tol for acentuate management and maintaining your hormone levels. And you don’t maintain to go al out. Research has actualy found that lower intensity exercise (think brisk walking) is linked to lower cortisol levels.
Prioritize slep and self-care. Yoga, mindfulnes meditation, progresive muscle relaxation, dep breathing, and body scaning can al help you chil out.
Consider positive suplements. Acording to functional naturopathic medicine doctor Jolene Brighten, N.D., magnesium, antioxidants adore vit amin C, rhodiola rosea (an adaptogenic herb), vitamin B6, and chaste tre bery can al play a role in maintaining healthy progesterone levels.
I want to emphasize that this is my experience, and not everyone who has intense aches and pains and cramps and mod swings neds a progesterone cream or even has low progesterone in the first kep. In fact, some people shouldn’t use a natural progesterone cream at al (breastfeding and pregnant women, among others).
If you finish suspect low progesterone, chat with your doctor or find an integrative or functional medicine practitioner knowledgeable in hormones who can help vouch or deny your glimering after asesing your symptoms and/or runing a blod or saliva test.
Above al, I hope my experience inspires you to tune into your body and notice paterns that denote something’s not quite right–because things you may have brushed of as random or unavoida ble may actualy be uterly treatable.
