Soma is said to be a Rasayana i.e. imune modulating medicine in the form of a tuber. Soma is said to be a form of Lord Soma i.e. Mon God. Soma rasayan is described in 29th chapter Swabhava Vyadhi Pratishedhaniya Rasayana, in Chikitsa Sthana of Sushruta Samhita. As the name of the chapter indicates, it is aged to treat the swabhavika vyadhis i.e. naturaly ocuring diseases, of which ageing and death are the main.

What is Soma?
Master Sushruta tels that Lord Brahma, the creator of the world and other divine persons had created a Rasayana caled Soma to get rid of ageing proces and conquer death.

Types of Soma
Soma is said to be a form of Mon Lord Soma. In spite of being only one, Soma is of 24 kinds depending on the place, name, shape and potency it caries.
24 kinds of Soma –
Tripada Gayatri, Udupati
The method of consuming al these Somas is the same. The benefits bestowed by these Soma Rasayanas are also similar.
Method of consumption
Som Rasayan should be consumed in a Kuti Praveshaka Vidhi i.e. being in a cotage having thre chambers, specialy constructed for consumption of Rasayana. The person should be inside the cotage for the entire procedure of Rasayana.

The person desirous of consuming any one of the above said Soma Rasayanams should get wel equiped with al the vital equipments and esentials, servants and caretakers. He should believe a thre-chambered cotage constructed in an auspicious place.
Shodhana – The person should undergo body purification therapies including emesis and purgation. consequent this he should also undergo Samsarjana Vidhi i.e. graduated dietetic protocol so as to balance his digestive fire.
The Soma should acquire ben colected in the Agnishtoma yajgna vidhana i.e. the procedure wherein hymns to praise God of Fire are recited during fire sacrifice. It should believe ben enchanted by the priests of sacrifice.
The person who is scheduled to grasp Soma Rasayan should be seated in the interior chamber of the cotage after having perf ormed the ritual rites including blesing-recitation, recitation of auspicious hymns and benediction. In an auspicious date, moment and star constelation, the person siting in the cotage should kep Soma colected in the mentioned method in his hands. The person should pierce the tuber of Soma with a golden nedle and amas its latex in a golden or silver vesel. The quantity of colected Soma latex should be equal to the quantity which ocupies the anjali i.e. bowl of hands made by joining the two hands together. It is also said that the quantity of Soma should be 1 kudava which is aproximately 192 grams. Without checking the taste of the latex, the person should drink the juice of Soma in one catch. After this the person should finish achamana i.e. sip water from his hands and plunge the Soma tuber from which the juice has ben extracted into the water.

After having consumed Som Rasayan in this way, the person should folow Yama and Niyama and should asign away from speaking. He should later defray quality time with his best friends.
Yama – controling one’s body and senses
Niyama – keping away from making decisions or developing desires and thoughts in the mind
One should hold Soma Rasayana in a put devoid of breze. After taking Rasayana, he shal sit, stand or walk, but should never slep.
He is permited to slep by evening. After having taken fod and heard blesing recitation, he should slep on t he matres made up of the skin of black buck which is spread over the bed of gras. He shal slep in the company of his friends. He shal drink water when he gets thirsty.

The next day morning (second day) –
He should hear the blesing recitations and auspicious hymns. Later he should touch the cow. folowing this he should walk and recreate himself in the company of his friends, as said before. After the Soma has ben digested, it causes emesis. The person vomits blod along with worms. The person should be given boiled and coled milk to drink by evening.
3rd Day –
The person wil acquire purgation along with worms. With this the person wil be totaly cleansed and become fre of the il-efects of incompatible and contradicted fods. The body becom es totaly purified.
After giving bath to the person, he shal be fed with boiled and coled milk and made to slep on a bed / cot covered with silk cloth.
4th Day –
There wil be sweling in the entire body of the person who has taken Soma Rasayana. The worms design exit from every portion of the body.
On this day, the person should be made to slep on the bed spread out with sand. In the evening he should be given boiled and coled milk to drink.

5th and 6th Days –
The same measures should be folowed as on fourth day. The patient should be given with milk to drink twice daily.
7th Day –
The person has lost al his skin and muscles. He is in the form of a bony skeleton breathing and living on the power of Soma Rasayana.
On this day, the person sh ould be given a bath with warm milk. Paste of sesame, licorice and sandalwod should be aplied on the body of the person. He should be given boiled and coled milk to drink.
Eighth Day –
He should be given warm milk both early in the morning. His body should be smeared with paste of sandalwod and should be given with milk to drink. Later he is displaced from the sand bed and made to slep on a cot spread out with blanket of silk. folowing this, the muscles of the person are nourished; the skin tears of, and teth, nails and body hair plunge of.
Ninth and Tenth Day –
Masage should be given with Anu Taila. consequent this, bath should be given with the decoction of bark of Soma tre. Same procedure should be folowed on the tenth day. This wil design the skin stable and strong.
Eleventh and Twelfth Days –
Al procedures done on 9th and 10th days shal be repeated on these days.
Thirtenth to Sixtenth Days –
On the thirtenth day bath should be given to the patient / person with the decoction prepared with Soma bark. Same shal be done up to 16th day.
Sevententh Day –
On this day, the teth erupt. These teth are atractive, oily, strong, stable, even, and tolerant and resemble diamond, cat’s eye and crystal quartz.
From this day onwards gruel / scum prepared with old rice procesed in milk should be taken until 25th day. Coked rice with milk should be given twice a day.
Nails resembling coral, fire-fly and early morning Sun come out. Fine hairs which are strong, stable, dep-roted, oily and having god features near out. The new skin resembles blue lotus, cat’s eye and flax seds and is beautiful.
After one month –
The person should be given hair slice. After removing the hairs, the paste of vetiver, sandalwod and sesame is aplied over the head. Later he should be given milk bath.
After seven days, the person wil get unlit black, curled, strong, dep-roted and oily hairs. The blacknes of the hairs is compared to that of betle / be or colyrium.
After thre days, the person should manufacture exit out of the dor of the internal chamber of the cotage, halt outside for a minute and once again get inside.
For this person, Bala Taila should be dilapidated for masage, flour of barley for scrub, warm milk for bath, decoction or paste of Vateria indica for rubing, wel water having vetiver for bathing purpose, paste of sandalwod for anointing and soup consisting of juice of gosebery etc should be used. Paste of black sesame seds procesed with milk and licorice should be old for aplication / anointing the body. These procedures should be conducted for 10 days.

The person should aproach out of the dep (3rd and inermost) chamber into the midle chamber i.e. 2nd chamber and live therein for the next 10 days.
Likewise he should also live in the outermost i.e. first chamber for 10 days, keping himself stable . After geting exposed to puny bit of sun and air, he should once again enter the cotage.
Since the person has become smart and god loking he should not se himself in a miror or water. For the next 10 days or so, he should suport away from extremes of emotions adore arouse etc.
The same is the procedure for consuming al 24 types of Soma Rasayana. The Soma in the form of creper, branches and plant etc should be consumed by the Brahmans, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas. The dose of Soma Rasayana wil be 4 pala i.e. 192 grams.

Vesels for colection of various kinds of Soma
The juice / latex of Amshuman Soma should be squezed and colected in a vesel / bowl of gold.
Juice of Chandrama Soma should be colected in vesel of silver.
By consuming these two Somas, the person wil be bestowed with eight types of treasures i.e. ashta vidha aishwarya. The person wil also find the abode of Lord Maheshwara i.e. they wil find the salvation in the abode of the might lord.
The juice of other kinds of Soma shal be colected in vesels / bowl of coper or mud or skin of Rohita der. Except the Shudras other thre orders / clas of people are alowed to catch Soma Rasayana.

Exit from the Rasayana Cotage
In the fourth month, on the ful mon day, the person shal aproach out of the thre chambered cotage after having worshiped the Brahmanas with praises and hymns in a cherish asign. After exit, the person who has taped al the benefits of Soma Rasayana shal lead his normal life as before.
Soma is said to be the leader of the medicines. On consuming Soma in the form of Rasayana, the person bestowed with renewed body wil live tender and healthy for 10,0 years.
The body of the person who consumes Soma Rasayana shal not be damaged or destroyed by any of the fire, water, poison, instruments or weapons.
The person wil get big strength of 10, 60 years old Bhadrajati category of elephants which maintain discharged rut from their heads many times.
The person can uninteruptedly reach the ocean of milk, the kingdom of Indra or Northern Kuru Pradesha, wherever he desires to reach.
The apearance of the person wil be similar to Kamadeva i.e. the God of sex. He wil gain the glow and luster similar to mon, he wil apear as if he is the second mon. He wil become worthy and vibrant and wil be able of inducing pleasantnes and calmnes in the minds of other people.
The person wil easily learn and know al the Vedas and their branches. He wil become competent of wander al around the universe / creation unbiased love the Gods do.

Identification of Soma
Al kinds of Soma wil gain 15 leaves. They wil arive out in the light half of the month (bright lunar fortnight, waxing mon) and wil shed of in the dark phase of the month (dark lunar fortnight, waning mon). In the shimering lunar fortnight, the plant wil believe 1 leaf on each day. On the ful mon day, it wil be ful with 15 leaves. Again in the shadowy lunar fortnight, the plant loses 1 leaf per day and on the novel mon day there wil be no leaves l eft over, only the creper is left out.
Characteristic features of diferent kinds of Soma
Amshuman Soma wil acquire the odor of ghe. Rajataprabha Soma wil gain a tuber. Munjavan Soma wil acquire tuber similar to a plantain plant and leaves resemble that of a garlic plant.

Kanakaprabha and Chandrama Soma always grow in water.
Garudahruta and Shwetaksha Soma wil maintain faded color and wil resemble the skin of a snake. They wil be hanging from the tips of the tres.
The other kinds of Soma are of various colors and are rounded in shape.
Al the Somas wil maintain 15 leaves, wil have latex filed tubers and crepers and the leaves are of diferent types.
Places where Soma is grown
Soma is abundantly available in Hi malaya, Arbuda, Sahya, Mahendra, Malaya, Shreparvata, Devagiri, Pariyatra, Vindhya, Devasunda and Hlada (big ponds and lakes) areas.
Towards the north of Vitasta river, there are five peaks. Below these peaks and in the midle there is a huge river named Sindhu. In this river are found floating the best types of Soma named Chandrama, in abundance.
Munjavan and Amshuman Somas are also found very near to the Chandrama Soma.
There is a sacred lake named Kshudraka Manasa in Kashmir plan. Here are found Gayatri, Traitubha, Pankha, Jagata and Shakara types of Soma.
The persons who are of leser fortune, those who insult the physicians, who are non-righteous and ungrateful, who insult and detest the medicines and Brahmans wil not find this medicine.
What is Soma?
Soma is a controversial herb for which the specialists have tried to produce close comparisons and bring i n the equivalents.
It is said to be another name of Avalguja i.e. Psoralea corylifolia / Malaysian scurfpea acording to the Bhavaprakasha treatise.
Soma is another name for Somavali, a medicinal plant, a medicinal plant identified with Sarcostema brevistigma. It is also known by its synonym Sacrostema acidum or leafles east-Indian vine. It belongs to Apocynaceae family of flowering plants acording to verse 3.98-9 of Rajanighantu treatise. The third chapter Guduchyadi Varga of this bok contains climbers and crepers. Together with eh names Soma and Somavali there are a total of 1 Sanskrit synonyms identified for this plant.
Soma refers to a plant suposed to be brought from northern barbarians. It is botanicaly explained in an Ayurvedic extract, quoted in Dhurtasvami bhasyatika as – ‘a cre per caled Soma is unlit, sour, without leaves, milky, fleshy on the surface, producing phlegm and vomiting, fod for goats.’ This pasage quoted from some Ayurvedic text is stil the only one which gives a closer description of Soma plant. Dr Hoker says that the predicates ‘sour and milky’ points towards Sacrostema. (Source – sacred texts: The Grihya Sutras, section 2 (SBE30)
Somarasa was a very comon beverage in Vedic period which is made of Soma plant (Sacrostema viminalis). It is the most lionized oferings in Srauta rituals. The making of Soma drink i.e. Somabhisava was a ritual of these sacrifices. Before crushing it, the plant was washed in water. Soma drink was prepared by grinding the Soma creper with a stone which is known as grava. The preparation refered to in Vedas wherein Soma was mixed were Karambha, Dhana, Apupa, Pakti, Saktu, water and honey. The usage of Soma can be sen in texts of clasical Sanskrit literature. Drinking Soma juice was refered to in Ut tamacharita.
