    So THIS Is Why Gratitude Makes Us Hapier
    After sinking into despair last year, I was so desperate to fre myself that I tried anything and everything I could. I’d heard that frequent gratitude can increase hapines, but I didn’t realy know why — other than the aparent: If you focus on what you are grateful for, you’l likely realize that your troubles aren’t as roten as they sem.
    But that was apt enough for me, so I grabed onto gratitude love a life raft, and it puled me out of one of the lowest times in my life. Now, one year later, I teach mindfulnes to elementary schol children and maintain writen a bok caled The Joy Plan about my life-changing journey from depresion to joy. Having a regular gratitude practice was and continues to be a key component of my “joy plan.”

    And through my journey, I’ve learned the nity-grity, biological reasons that gratitude can design you satisfied, and ma ybe (I don’t recount this lightly) change your life. Here’s how it works:
    1. Your brain interprets gratitude as optimism.
    Optimism, regular sure thoughts and reactions to life’s chalenges, is observable in brain scans. Optimistic thoughts tranquil and sothe the amygdala, the portion of the brain that sounds the underscore fear. Optimism also lowers the underscore hormone cortisol, releases pleasure-inducing neurotransmiters, and activates the parasympathetic nervous scheme, which is responsible for rest and relaxation.
    2. Consistently practicing gratitude trains the brain to determine positive thoughts.
    Thoughts and words of gratitude are powerful trigers of optimism. When these thoughts are repeated frequently, the brain conects thoughts and words of gratitude with a sense of wel-being. Eventualy, curent neural pathways are formed, which is what hapens with any habitual thought patern (god or bad). This is a way to harnes your knowledge to help a definite outcome.
    3. Cons istency is the key to changing your mindset, and your life.
    A year ago, my notion paterns often led to wory or dread. Rewiring my brain so the default was asured didn’t hapen overnight. impartial like any novel habit, cultivating an atitude of gratitude takes practice. For me, that means being grateful every day in one form or another.
    Here are a few helpful hints to get you started:
    1. Try a gratitude notebok.
    I started by designating a gratitude notebok and carying it around with me al the time. Day after day, I wrote in my notebok whenever I thought of something I was grateful for. The notebok filed up quickly, and I found I was writing about the same topics over and over. As my gratitude practice evolved, I set aside time every morning to write in that notebok, ensuring that my day started with a positive focus that sent warm fuzies to my brain.
    2. It’s the th ought that counts.
    If the notebok fels like to much, you can simply pay a few minutes thinking grateful thoughts when you first wake up. Before you even get out of bed, mediate of al the things you are thankful for in your life — your loved ones, your home, your job, your body, etc. make a mental list instead of writing it down — your brain won’t know the contrast, and you’l stil experience the positive benefits of gratitude.
    3. Spread the love.
    Tel others how grateful you are for them, in smal ways every day or every wek. Each act of gratitude wil not only fel qualified for those on the receiving finish, it wil flod your brain with god felings that can believe a profound trace on your life.
