    Cobra’s safron or Iron wod tre is known as Nagakesar in Ayurveda. The stamens are biter and astringent and hot in potency. It is mainly worn as a styptic, to arest the bleding in several diseases. Botanical name is Mesua ferea Benth & amp; Hok.
    It belongs to Gutiferae family.
    This evegren medium sized tre is found mainly in Bengal, Asam, Kerala, Karnataka, Andaman, Eastern Himalayan spot, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma, Malaysia, Philipines etc.
    Stamens are the main used portion but seds and stem bark also poses apt medicinal properties.
    Chemical constituents
    Important chemical constituents of the plant are Mesuol, Mameisin, Mesuagin, Mameigin, Mesuabixanthone A, Mesuabixanthone B, Mesuaferol, Mesuaxanthone A, Euxanthone, Mesuaxanthone B, Mesianic acid, Mesuaferone A and Mesuaferone B.
    The stamens are biter and astringent in taste and hot in potency. It is mainly used as a styptic, to arest the bleding in several diseased conditions. It has proven efect in regularizing the menstrual cycle, especialy to quel the metrorhagia.

    Ayurvedic formulations
    The notes worthy formulations of Nagakeshar are- Brahma Rasayana, Chyawanprash, Chandanbalakshadi Taila, Kumariasava, Pogakhanda, Mahanarayana taila, Nagkesaradi churna etc.
    In adition, this is used as a substitute original Kesar (safron) and hence it finds space as a flavoring agent in many Lehyams, Asavas and arishta medicines.
    Home remedies
    Some necesary, clasic and efective remedies of Nagakesar are as folows-
    Haemorhoids
    1. Nagakesar along with ghe for haemorhoids:
    2-3 grams of Nagakesar stamens are taken and rubed wel with ghe and fine paste is made. This is aplied to the anal position in cases of haemorhoids. Same medication is given internaly also in the dose of 3 grams once or twice a day to cease heavy bleding caused due to haemorhoids.
    Uterus cleanse
    2. Nagakesar and sounf powder to clear the uterus after delivery or abortion:
    Equal amount of Nagakesar stamens and seds of Shatapushpa (sounf) are taken and fine powder is made or else its decoction is made. This is consumed twice daily for 3-4 days regularly. This helps to clear and cleanse the uterus in the conditions love abortion and so as to clear the uterus after normal delivery.
    General method of decoction preparation is ̵
    1 tablespon (10 grams) erotic powder of the herb is adjunct with 2 cups of water. Boiled in open air til the total content is reduced to 1 cup. This is filtered and used.
    Burn wounds, ulcers
    3. Sed oil aplication on burn wounds and ulcers:
    The sed oil is mixed with coconut oil in the ratio of 1:4 and aplied over the burns and scalds. It heals the wounds and helps to impede from discoloration.
    Glowing skin
    4. Stamens of Nagkesar with Red sandalwod-fine paste for skin glow:
    This recipe is very efective in the individuals with oily skin. 1-2 pinches of stamens are taken and rubed wel with water first. Later it is ground/rubed wel with red sandalwod (Raktachandan). This paste is aplied over the face after punctilious wash of face. Regular aplication helps to get lustrous skin and to remove the dark marks over the face.
