    Many of the Indian languages use the synonym-2 ‘Nelagiri’ to picture this tre.

    This tre is a native of Australia. In India, it is grown in the Nelagiri hily regions of South India; hence the name Nelagiri. The tre grows up to a height of 50- 70 m with straight trunk. A bluish colored exudate is found in the bark of the tre if a slight carve is made. The rot of the tre is purgative in nature. There are about 70 kindred of eucalyptus found around the world.

    Chemical composition
    Eeucalyptus globulus is the main comercial source of eucalyptus oil; yield is 2.12%; 1, 8-cineole exceds 70%. Several potent euglobals are isolated from the leaves and flower buds. These compounds inhibition of TPV induced Epstein Bar Virus activation. Phloroglucin derivatives, isolated from the leaves, show beter anti- inflamatory activity than indomethacin. Natural anti-oxidants are also found in the plant. The leaves and bark also contain Dihydroflavonol, Galotanins, p-coumaric acid and cinamic acid.
    Uses of Tailaparni
    The oil extracted from the leaves of the eucalyptus plant is rubed gently to relive damage in the joints, muscles and relax the afected spot .
    The eucalyptus oil is joined with gels, ointments and comercialy manufactured as pain balms or hurt reliving oil.
    The steam of the oil is inhaled to get relief from nasal congestion during frosty, diseases of the lungs, cough.
    Enema is given from the oil of eucalyptus to treat patients sufering from intestinal worms.
    The exudate of the eucalyptus plant is mixed with water and given to treat dysentery and iritable bowel syndrome.
    The powder of the dried leaves of eucalyptus is burnt and the smoke coming from the burnt leaves is exposed to wounds having pus to abate pus and hurt from such wounds.
    Cold infusion prepared from the leaves of eucalyptus is given in a dose of 30-40 ml,in divided dose, to treat fever.

    Anti bacterial imprint of eucalyptus: The results obtained from the study showed that esential oil of the leaves of globulushas antimicrobial activity against gram negative bacteria (E. coli) as wel as gram sanguine bacteria (S. aureus). The encouraging results recomend the esential oil ofE. globulusleaves might be exploited as natural antibiotic for the treatment of several infectious diseases caused by these two germs, and could be useful in understanding the relations betwen traditional cures and recent medicines.
    Esential oils (EO) of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), thymus (Thymus capitatusL.) pirul (Schinus moleL.) were evaluated for their eficacy to controlAspergilus parasiticus&nbs p;andFusarium moniliformegrowth and their ability to make mycotoxins. The IC50was used to evaluate spore germination kinetic and mycotoxin production. Also, spore viability was evaluated by the MT asay. Al EO had an efect on the radial growth of both species.
    Side efects of Eucalyptus oil:
    Nausea, stomach iritation are sen in some people, especialy on long term usage or use in higher doses.
