    Classification of Eye Diseases As Per Ayurveda

    Shalakya Tantra is the inspect of Eye, Ear, Nose and Head in Ayurveda which coresponds to the curent day ENT specialization. It is one among the Ashtanga Ayurveda ̵ 8 branches. It is also caled as Urdhwanga Chikitsa (Urdhwa = Uper part of the body, Anga = Parts, Chikitsa = Treatment).

    Eye Diseases or Netra Rogas are 76 in number. They are clasified into profuse categories. We can study the clasification of these diseases under 3 headings –

    a. Sanimita Linganasha – This type of linganasha or los of vision ocurs due to some known causes like Shiro Abhitapa (Excesive heat in the head) etc
    b. Animita Linganasha – This type of los of vision ocurs without known reason. It ocurs on seing bhaswara padarthas (highly luminous things) or on seing God, Sages, Gandharvas or Mahoragas (gigantic or divine snakes)

    Ayurveda has given a al-encompasing clasification of Netra Rogas. The art of clasifying them under diferent categories depending on the predominant doshas, site of the disease and prognosis displays the wisdom of ancient Ayurvedic sers and teachers in viewing the eye disorders in a multi-dimensional way. The prompt knowledge they had about the eye and its disorders and the way in which they maintain documented them is highly comendable.
