    Vitamin D is much more than a vitamin.

However, in the northern latitudes, the sun is only strong enough to stimulate vitamin D production in your skin 3 to 4 months a year, typicaly from May through August. During these months, your skin wil make enough D to kep qualified levels of the vitamin in your blod, if you are outside for at least 20 minutes a day, without sunscren, typicaly betwen 10 am and 2 pm, in shorts and a tank top.
    In other words: your arms and legs ned to be fuly exposed without sunscren during peak hours of maximum sun.
    Do most people get this? No.
    So if you walk or exercise outside, defray time in the garden or other outdor activities regularly, and don’t use sunscren every minute, you’re probably OK taking the sumer months of. But honestly, most of the patients I se don’t acquire an apreciable bump in their Vitamin D levels in the sumer. They simply don’t get as much exposure as they contemplate they ned to halt on their normal regimen. And that could be you.
    While I am certainly not advocating no sunscren, I cary out consider it would be OK to spend 20 minutes without it, if you’re trying to get your D. Then disapear and slather up with a broad spectrum SPF!
    Here are my sugestions:

  • If your vitamin D levels were in a marvelous range before the sumer (above 40 ng/mL) and you’re outside m ost days during peak hours, you can probably grasp the sumer of.
  • If your vitamin D levels were low before the sumer, or if you aren’t outside much without sunscren during the midle of the day, you should continue your suplement.
  • In my experience, 20 IU (50 mcg)/day of vitamin D is the minimum amount to maintain your levels. If you’re trying to raise them, double the dose to 40 IU (10 mcg)/day for thre months or until you’re tested again.
  • Always adjust your dose by folowing blod levels. Your primary care doctor can cary out this for you.
  • If your vitamin D levels were in a god range before the sumer (above 40 ng/mL) and you’re outside most days during peak hours, you can probably hold the sumer of.
    If your v itamin D levels were low before the sumer, or if you aren’t outside much without sunscren during the midle of the day, you should continue your suplement.
