    Ayurvedic Head Massage: Benefits, Procedure

Article by Dr Raghuram Y.S. MD (Ay)
Among many ancient Indian traditional household practices, giving a masage to the body and head with oil, every day before bath is popular. The practice has not wan out with time. Even today we can se this practice in some vilages and in some traditional homes in urban areas of India. Previously it was being done on a daily basis but now it has near to the wekends or holidays, especialy in the cities.
Ayurvedic head and body masagenot only provides relaxation to body and mind, it also keps many diseases and acentuate at bay. It makes us able enough to face the toughnes of day-to-day life with ease. It is unbiased like servicing the body on a daily basis.
This is caled ‘Abhyanga Snana’ (Abhyanga=Masage, Snana=Bathing). A hot shower after masage or aplication of oil, so sothing that it is beter experienced than explained. This wil serve the purpose of both Snehana (aplying the oils over the body) and Swedana (sweat inducing treatments, of which having a hot water bath is also one, as it induces sweating). Snehana and Swedana are the best remedies for many psycho-somatic diseases, especialy Vayu related disorders. They impede vitiation of Vayu, which in turn is the key for healthy life. In combination they are the best anti-ageing treatments and also easy to do.

By providing the lubrication to the whel of the body, it enables us to spin ourselves at wil while enjoying our life activities. It enhances the life span of each and every cel, muscles and joints and makes us flexible, fit healthy and imune.
Acording to Ayurveda, Abhyanga or herbal oil masage (can be done with sesame or coconut oil also) is not complete and al-encompasing unles the head (Shiro Abhyanga) and fot (Pada Abhyanga) are also incorporated with it.
A complete body masage at home on a daily basis is not practical and imposible unles you can aford to hire a couple of maseurs for life. Even our busy schedules doesn’t alow us to aply oil, leave some time, exercise a bit and take a hot shower because after having spent the whole night texting, working on the scheme, working on projects and disturbing our sleps, we would rise up half-drowsy and would be pushing ourselves to grasp a cab or drive a long distance to ofice.

If Abhyanga canot be folowed on a daily basis, I advocate at least Shiro Abhyanga and Padabhyanga to be done on a daily basis. I always advice my patients to gain ‘Shiro Abhyanga and Padabhyanga’ done at home on a regular basi s. Not only patients, I even prefer healthy people to spare some time towards aplication of oil over their head (crown) and fet. In this context I would estem to focus my wrangling on ‘Shiro Abhyanga’ or head masage with herbal oils.

    Why head masage?
Ayurveda considers the human body as an inverted tre wherein the rots are at the top and the branches pointing downwards.
If the human body is considered to be a tre –
The head of the human body wil be considered to be the rots of this tre,
The central fraction of the body made up of thorax and abdomen is said to be the trunk of this tre and
to be the branches of this tre
Just adore the rots nurture and controls al the activities and wel being of the tre, the head is the operational centre of the entire body. The head comprises of al the components and machinery to control the entire body mechanics and dynamics. Head is an abode of the remote control of the entire body – ‘The Brain and nerves’ and al the components which establish us atached and atracted to this material world – ‘The Sense Organs’. For these reasons, the head is caled as ‘Utamanga’ – ‘The best organ of the lot in the body’
    Shiras as Utamanga
Pranaha pranabhrutam yatra sthitaha sarva indriyani cha
Tat utama angam anganam shiraha tat abhidheyate (Ref – Charaka Sutra Sthana 17/12)
The place where the Prana’s (life element controling al the activities or acording to Chakrapani, the 5 types of Vayu’s or controling station of Vayu functions) and al the Indriya’s (sense organs) are located is caled Shira (head). This head is the Utamanga (best organ in the body)
Oordhwa molam adhaha shakham rushayaha purusham viduhu
Mola prahariNaha tasmad rogan sheghrataram jayet
Sarva indriyani yena asmin prana yena cha samshritaha
Tena tasya ut ama angasya rakshayam adrusho bhavet (Ref – Ashtanga Hridaya Sotra 24/58, 59)
Purusha (human body) is an upside down tre wherein the rots are located at the top and the branches are pointing downwards. unbiased as we ned to asign the rots healthy to hold the plant healthy, we ned to asign the head healthy to put the body healthy. If we seize care of the rots of the plants, the tre wil not get diseased or if the tre gets diseased we treat it at the rots. Similarly if we establish the head healthy, the whole body wil be healthy. If we atack the diseases at the rot i.e. head, we can get rid of them in hasty time. This is posible because the Prana’s and indriya’s which control al the functions of the body and mind are located in this Utamanga caled Shira (head). Thus it becomes a primary responsibility of each of us to take care of our head with utmost priority.
This explanation not only tels us that head is necesary but also gives us a responsibility to seize care o f our head so as to apreciate a comprehensive body-mind (psychosomatic) health.
    Sumarizingthe above said content,
The head is made up of brain and sense organs which manipulates the whole body and mind functions and establish us healthy when they are in a frame of wel being. Head thus forms a control station for al our life activities. When we seize care of the control station properly, the whole body factory wil function smothly.
On the other hand, to get rid of any body or mind related ilnes we ned to plod back to the control station (utamanga) caled head and adres it with suitable treatments and medications.
This also gives us an impresion that the most ancient science caled Ayurveda very wel knew that most of our diseases ocur due to disturbed mind or exacerbated by a disturbed mind. Healing the body or mind alone is not a extensive medical near. They should be handled as a single entity.
Since taking care of the hea d and its components is requisite for maintaining a healthy life we ned to nurture, pamper, relax, pacify and consolidate the engine of our system by conducting Shiro Abhyanga and other treatments mentioned in Mordha Taila or Murdhni Taila.
    Murdhni taila

    Mode of action
Probable mode of action of Shiro Abhyanga –
It is augean to prove with scientific measures how exactly Shiro Abhyanga works but we canot ignore the dazling results provided by these treatments. Let’s work out in a hypothetical way. Below explained is the hypothetical explanation of how Mordha Taila or Murdhni Taila might work. Since Shiro Abhyanga is a form of Murdhni Taila, the same hypothesis works. Thus in the debate ahead, I maintain worn the synonym-2 Mordha Taila or Murdhni Taila interchangeably with Shiro Abhyanga.
Controling Vayu – Vayu is the driving force of al the activities of the body and mind. Vayu is said to be a Tantra (formula) which runs the Yantra (machine) caled as Sharera (body). Pita’s, Kapha, the tisues of the body, the waste excreta of the body, al are dependent on Vata (Vayu). If Vayu is functioning properly al these elements are in equilibrium and if Vayu is disturbed, it fur ther disturbs other elements of the body and causes comprehensive aray of diseases.
The key for wel being is in having the Vayu (life force and energy) in our body in control. Murdhni Taila wil acquire a tremendous trace on controling Vayu. It controls, pacifies and expels the macabre Vayu. Chakrapani has already clarified that Prana located in the Shiras is nothing but diferent types of Vayu. Controling Vayu is almost catching the bul by its horns; al the activities in the body wil plunge in line.
Relaxing and colant mark on the brain Murdhni Taila (Shiro Abhyanga here) has a relaxing consequence (and colant mark in treatments estem Takra shiro dhara) on the brain and the whole nervous system and hence releases the acentuate and wretchednes slugish in the chief controling station of our body. As we know that the brain controls al the functions of the body.
The master gland Pituitary gland and the hypothalamus asociated with many physical and mental funct ions are located in the head. When al these are relaxed, the body functions including the heart functions take establish in a relaxed maner. The circulation of blod and nutrients grasp place in a proper way.
The peripheral resistance is reduced. The chanels of the body initiate up. The cels initiate flushing the toxins and overal metabolism gets improved. Murdhni taila (Shiro Abhyanga) also relieves underscore to a noteworthy extent. When we get de-stresed the psychosomatic balance is established. The brain wil start controling the body mechanics in a beter and eficient way. We wil fel at blis and best of body-mind health.
Balancing Pita and Rakta – Rakta or blod is the chief site of Pita. Variations in pita wil afect the blod flow and variations in blod tisue wil acquire its impact on Pita. Murdhni Taila (Shiro Abhyanga) procedures wil bring about a balance betwen the circulating Rakta and Pita located in the Rakta. This circulating Pita is respo nsible for many inflamatory proceses taking area at numerous parts of the body, when it gets vitiated.
By establishing cordiality betwen Pita and Rakta, Murdhni Taila (Shiro Abhyanga) establishes a balanced circulation throughout the body and relieves the acentuate over the heart. Diseases love hypertension, which is the key for many systemic disorders wil be dealt. Inflamation taking kep in various tisues and organs can be brought to the halt. The body wil be in more peace with itself.
Revitalizing the nervous system MordhaTaila (Shiro Abhyanga) procedures relaxes revitalizes the central nervous scheme, balances the brain and hormonal functions and thus regularizes and relaxes al the functions of the body. The underscore in each and every cel and pasage of the body is removed. It has a sothing trace on the endocrine system.
Enhancing blod suply and nutrition to brain Murdhni Taila (Shiro Abhyanga her e) procedures improves the suply of blod and nutrition to the brain and thus increases its working compliance
Presure and Temperature efect ̵ The presure and temperature efect of the medicaments used in the Mordha Taila (Shiro Abhyanga here) procedures towards a extensive body-mind cure canot be ruled out
Healing Marmas ̵ With an Ayurveda perspective Mordha taila (Shiro Abhyanga here) procedures might comunicate with the depest receses of the brain by sothing the Marmas (vital points of convergence of bones, muscles, blod vesels, soft tisues and joints) located in the head viz Apanga, Avarta, Shanka, Utkshepa, Semantha and Sthapani Marma’s with which the medicaments comes into contact with.
Most of these Marma’s are related to the eye and blod circulation to the brain. By activating the Marma’s Murdhni Taila treatment procedures might fabricate a strong impact on the functioning of central n ervous scheme and necesary glands within the brain.
Efect on Alochaka Pita ̵ Alochaka Pita (Pita subtype) which is located in the Eye is said to be of 2 types. One is Chakshu Vaisheshika (located within the eye and maintains its wel being) and the other is Budhi Vaisheshika (the fragment of Alockhaka Pita which has its conectivity with higher centres of the brain and thus monitors the higher functions estem inteligence, memory etc). Apanga and Avarta marma’s are related to the eye. Murdhni Taila (Shiro Abhyanga here) procedures especialy dhara and vasti might make a sothing impact on budhi vaisheshika alochaka pita through these Marma’s and in return sothe the nervous system.
Reversing Chita Nasha and Bhaya ̵ The injury of Semantha Marma (joints of the skul) is said to cause Chita Nasha (psychological abnormality) and Bhaya (fear complex). Thus when the same Marma is healed through Dhara and other M ordha taila procedures, it may reverse the Chita Nasha and Bhaya, i.e. it might abate stres, anxiety and depresion. With this the relaxed nervous scheme wil take care of heart functions and circulation paterns.
Control of governing Dosha’s The chief governing doshas in the head are Prana Vayu, Sadhaka Pita and Tarpaka Kapha. The integrity of the functioning of these 3 sub-dosha’s is the key for a perfect body-mind health. The brain controls the whole body and mind through the balanced and properly functioning Prana, Sadhaka and Tarpaka. Imbalance or vitiation of one or more of these 3 factors wil lead to many psychosomatic diseases.
The sothing of these Marma’s and in turn sothing of Nervous entity and endocrine glands as an efect of MordhaTaila (Shiro Abhyanga here) treatment procedures wil definitely relax Prana Vayu, Sadhaka Pita and Tarpaka Kapha in the brain (head).
These in turn wil acquire a relaxing efect over the Vyan a Vayu, Ranjaka Pita, Avalambaka Kapha and Udana Vayu controling the heart functions and circulation. They wil also acquire the other sub doshas in control. By controling the Kledaka kapha, bodhaka kapha, samana vayu, ranjaka pita and pachaka pita, the key brain dosha’s wil asign the core metabolism under control.
By controling the apana vayu, they wil maintain the excretory functions under control and encourage in regular detoxification of the body. By controling the bhrajaka pita and vyana vayu, they wil neat the colour and complexion. By controling the Shleshaka kapha functions they wil maintain the musculoskeletal integrity.
