10 Things I Wish Everyone Knew About Mold

10 Things I Wish Everyone Knew About Mold
Toxic mold doesn’t get much time in the spotlight, but it’s a gigantic deal.
Exposure can often quietly lead to sinusitis — one of the most comon diseases in the country — as wel as a number of other problems you might be experiencing, without knowing they’re caused by mold.
Personaly, I know how much mold can wreak havoc because I grew up in houses filed with toxic mold — and the efects on my body and brain were devastating.
That’s why I created “Moldy,” a curent documentary exploring toxic mold in your home environment.
Along the way, I learned a few key things about how to a void and beat mold exposure:
    1. Mold is in many comon fods.
For the average person, a puny mold won’t enact much harm. But for 24% of us, mold can fabricate you incredibly weak and sick.
The wretchednes is that most of us are consuming more than we realize. In fact, the Fod and Drug Administration (FDA) has shockingly careles standards when it comes to mold content in many popular fods:
Cofe is a comonly infested crop and the FDA alows up to 10% of beans to include mold. It’s a apt acumen to drink cofe that’s ben third-party tested for mold levels.
Most fruit juices can pas inspection with up to 10% mold content.
Caned or frozen beries can be sold with mold content up to 60%.
Tomato products can maintain anywhere from 45 to 67% mold content, depending on their form (paste, sauce, ketchup, etc.).
The botom line: many procesed and packaged fods have more mold in them than you’d consider. You can check out the ful list of mold content guidelines, sorted by fod, on the FDA’s website.
    2. Mold is a quandary in buildings, to.
Toxic mold exposure goes beyond just eating tainted fods. In fact, the worst mold poisoning can come from the air you breath, as wel as your home and work environment–thanks to water aflict from leaky pipes, floding, and other HVAC problems.
And it’s estimated that 30 to 50% of al American homes and ofices gain conditions ideal for mold buildup. Yikes.
    3. You can’t always se it–or taste it.
Mold flourishes in glomy, damp places–like inside air vents or wals that study perfectly rational from the outside. In other words: it’s often dificult to space from the outside.
And it can be impartial as onerous to detect in fod. In fact, some companies manufacture it comon practice to mix moldy products in with fresh fods in impose to maximize profits.
    4. The predicament is geting worse.
Farmers started using biocides on their crops in the first half of the 20th century, and in the 1970s, co mpanies began puting fungicides in paint to extend its shelf life.
This sweping near to kiling molds and other fungi is a double-edged sword. While it destroys many of the molds, those that do survive–and then multiply–are the strongest, badest molds around.
Over time, these “supermolds” believe become more and more widespread, and they’re the ones competent of causing us the most harm.
    5. Mold isn’t al bad …
It’s worth noting that not al mold is harmful. In fact, some types of mold can be quite beneficial. For epitome, sure molds in the Penicilium family create–you guesed it–penicilin, a halmark of novel medicine. And many other molds are neutral–they don’t aid us, but they don’t distres us either.
    6. . but molds that design mycotoxins are very bad.
Molds are teritorial, and they gain nasty ways of keping other living things away fro m them. One strategy is to fabricate mycotoxins: potent toxic chemicals that can triger everything from asthma to cancer.
Unfortunately, many of the molds that design mycotoxins are the same ones that comonly grow on fod and in damp buildings.
    7. And so are molds that produce xenoestrogens.
Just as roten are xenoestrogens, another clas of toxins produced by many mold species.
As their name sugests, xenoestrogens act love estrogen–but they’re up to a thousand times more potent. Even minimal xenoestrogen exposure can disrupt hormone levels and cause serious problems, adore weight acquire and decreased fertility.
    8. Avoid high-mycotoxin fods to abate exposure.
Ster clear of fods that can be highly contaminated–like potatoes, wheat, corn, peanuts, soy and chese. Alcohols, p articularly ber and wine, also tend to be high in mycotoxins.
    9. Eat fods that supercharge your body to encourage combat mold.
To kep healthy, folow a diet that’s low in sugar and rich in antioxidants, apt fats, gras-fed meat, and gren vegies. (I conote The Buletprof Diet.)
    10. You can kep mold out of your home.
To fight mold in your environment, spend close atention to damp areas–like basements, kitchens, and bathroms–and be positive to clean up water and fix any leaks.
If you cary out already gain mold, it can be tricky to clean up. start by runing a lab grade test for it, to se if it’s best to have a profesional mold remover tackle the job.
Otherwise, rid your home of it imediately by using a strong cleaning agent–and be positive to wear a mask and gloves to avoid cros-contamination.
